Miracle! made Vista work, I am surprised indeed

Post by rikhyray » Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:17 pm

I already gave up on Vista for music and got myself another notebook with XP, keeping Vista all other work.
Then accidentally found this yesterday
http://blogs.msdn.com/pigscanfly/archiv ... llers.aspx
I am not much of geek so perhaps some people here will make more out of it but I decided to check the Nvidia thingy, disabled all 3 entries in msconfig>start and wow! it brought the average DPC by 300-500, getting as low as 50, almost like XP.
I guess some smart pc experts can take it further following those ideas from the link.

Yeah but how much process elimination can one really take? This sounds like the guy is pinning the cause only on shitty driver issues.

Why do you think disabling your graphics software is a good thing? I mean sure your cutting down the overhead but aren't you pretty much stuck with no GL support? ..doesn't Ableton need advanced graphics support to run correctly?

The only processes I can see that could use a bit of trim is Networking., but yet again ..if you have audio gear that depends on network connection's.

\Stick the same hardware on a XP box running all processes with extra's ....I could run Halo on one screen and render audio on the next!

The choice is still clear to me!

I only disabled the useless , idiotic scanning-checking if there was ext monitor connected.... doing that every couple of seconds or minutes, whatever .The graphics work normally including connecting ext monitor but same time, first time have such low DPC, in several hours running audio had no issues, Vista as usable as XP. I am astonished that some bloody useless pseudo function was f...g up everything all the time, George W.Bush of computing indeed.

My most obvious problem was with TC Konnekt. Very frustrating because every time I used it it amazed me with clarity and definition but it was stopping every couple of minutes for perhaps a sec or 2. Echo works flawlessly on Vista but that TC sounds is addictive. I was already searching for alternative like sell the TC or get MBP. Luckily all works perfectly now and no more danger of becoming iDiot (a normal person who turns into idiot after purchasing Apple product).

The only way I could get Vista to work for me was by using OSX

I've had absolutely no problems using Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit for audio work. Once you eliminate all the unneeded extras (a few more than XP lol) it all works great. The only problem with 64 bit is not having the drivers for certain sound cards, but that is really the sound card manufacturers' fault.

That was a very useful link, it explains a lot. I have known about perfmon since NT, and it is a very good way to find out exactly what's getting used on in your machine.
