can't decide on a FW interface.... BUT

Post by Opus » Fri Nov 28, 2008 9:05 am

I've been lookin on ebay for a few weeks because I'm contemplating getting the old school MOTU 828. The original.

Just wondering if there are any original MOTU 828 owners out there who use Ableton. The MOST IMPORTANT thing I am concerned about is STABILITY.

I know that it has lower sample rates and bit depth, but those things really aren't a major concern for me. BTW, I'm not trying to start a debate about bit depths and sample rates.

Any witnesses?

look. that doesn't have enough ports.

i guess i should re-title my thread, "any happy MOTU 828 original owners out there?"

I'm looking for feedback on this interface.

yep, alright...

but as far as i know ( a friend of mine used the 828 ) it is not stable, theres a lot of hassle with the firewire chipset u use and the first (mk1) of the 828´s is cheap built and of not so good quality.
I would, for my part, not recommend it.
U´re better off with the old multiface from rme i´d say. but then the multiface has no preamps...

cheers

im curious why you would want that particular interface? (what does it have the most recent / stable interfaces dont?).

or, if you're heart is really set on an old 828, then yes; rename the thread.

He probably wants it because there are usually lots of going cheap on ebay.

It was good for it's time but mk2 and 3 are vastly improved. Max sampling freq 48 Khz, worse s/n ratio and less preamp gain with pres that are not as good as in the mk2 or 3.

Driver issues, especially on PC. And there are some people that want 300 bucks for a banged up one on ebay, I wouldn't pay more than 100 bucks for it, or save up and get a better interface.

just to be devils advocate here. i have had one for about 4 years now. it has seen more computers that any other piece of gear or softwear i have. I've always used mac and only this past year got ableton. I have NEVER had any problems with it. There are way better interfaces out there that can give you more features and sound quality but mine has been a tank. shit i even keep my imac on top of it.

Have a look at the Presonus Firepod. 8 outs, 8 ins with class A mic preamps, 2 guitar preamps, 8 outs, built like a tank, available for about £200 on ebay.
