controlling 2 devices at once using APC40

Post by synnack » Fri Jun 05, 2009 7:53 am

I'll probably get an APC40 at some point just because I'm a fan boy and thats what we do. Who can resist a clip fire grid?

However I'm not all together convinced that it will become my sole live controller. I can't see a way that you'd be able to control 2 devices at once, without creating static midi maps, which sort of defeat a main selling point of the APC40.

For example, when I perform I like to have my left hand, lets say turn up the distortion on drum loops, while simultaneously, adjusting the cutoff frequency on some pads with my right hand.

I have 8 knobs on my Trigger finger assigned to different, cross-device sets of controls and i switch between different sets using a custom patch i built in Max. I can turn one knob and depending on the value, the other knobs get routed to a different set of 8 controls.

I don't see a way to do this in APC40. It seems it is meant to control one device at a time. The only way to control multiple, is to statically assign controls to the knobs, which then... you can't switch between different banks of things.

Sucks really. You guys are smarter than me. Prove me wrong. How would I control multiple devices with one set of knobs on APC40 yet still be able to switch between sets of devices on the fly?

I think my current setup might actually be more useful than an APC40 in this regard.

wow, no one has the same issue or an idea?

Maybe I will post naked pics of Tone Deft to get some ideas going.

shit, not those pics again.

it won't be your solo controller. one bank of knobs if for pan, sendA, sendB and sendC control. the other are dedicated to control devices that live in clip view.

you can navigate clip view pretty well though without a mouse, look for the left and right arrow keys three rows up from the cross fader, below the lower bank of knobs.

with automap devices you can lock a control surface to a plug in, dunno if that helps.
