unintentionally modified apc40
unintentionally modified apc40
well, i modified my apc 40 last night....
my master fader popped out!
thought that maybe i could pop it back in, but i unscrewed every screw, allen screw, took every nut off,
and the thing will not come apart.
so, here i sit, looking at my apc40, thinking about how cheap the faders are.
caution folks,
i could see someone working this unit harder than i do live....
the shaft wasn't broken on the fader, it's just that the metal is inserted into a weak plastic joint in there...
it looks to be built very much like the one thing that i can remove, which is the cross fader...
you can see in the pic nothing is sheared off...
the plasic holding it in just gave out.
i'm going to see if akai will fix it for free...
too bad i have a gig on the 21st, but i guess any other fader would have been far worse.
i've only taken this thing out once so far in a padded case, it's not been mishandled at all, and i do not brutalize
my controllers...

what rough skin you have on your hands !
Re: unintentionally modified apc40
you removed the screws, did you remove the knobs?
that slider comes off easily for me, without breaking the mechanism.

nothing left.
the sliders and knobs come off no problem.
with everything off, i mean everything, the thing would just not come apart.
i wanted to verify/ see if i could pop the shaft back in.
or replace the fader.
oh well, if i can't take it apart, no issue with voiding warranty.
called robot speak, maybe they can put me in touch with akai...

i bet that's it, that there are screws under there.
yup, just looked. more screws. but i don't want to rip the feet off...
they are glued on, and before i go ripping things apart i'm gonna see what akai says...

Re: unintentionally modified apc40
yeah i bent the hell out of my fader picking it up off some records and a power cord got hold of it and gave it no mercy. anyone know where to get a replacement? mmm, guess it's time to send a letter to akai..
Re: unintentionally modified apc40
yup, there are 6 more screws under the rubber feet. just took the side wings off mine. takes a lot of the unnecessary size off the unit.
Re: unintentionally modified apc40
Some folks asked for pics of the side wings taken off:
Re: unintentionally modified apc40
Slightly odd, that those side handlebars don't have any other function other then to assist your grip while keeping you from falling over from the excess gravity changes you obviously generate while operating the unit!!! Ergonomics some might say! might mount the leftover handles to my wall to assist my rock climbing skills in developing.
WIll try and get a friend to mill flat ones out of aluminum instead, and get that big baby reduced in size. When done pic's will be up.
