Kneel at the altar of Rob Hall - DJ extraordinaire

Post by 4/4 » Sun Nov 22, 2009 2:56 am

All the gormless, uninformed, DJ derision going on in the forum has been grinding my gears a little. No doubt there's shit DJs out there, and morons who like them. But, uh, that's a crazy reason to write off the whole DJ 'culture', for want of a better word.

Anyways there's alot of quality DJs out there, but my favourite is Rob Hall, here's hoping Rob can change some of your opinions on the whole DJ thing. He's a hero.

http://www.rob-hall.co.uk // http://www.skam.co.uk (a savage label, btw)

The following 12 mixes were put out a while back on his website for free (of course), 1 a month, over a year. They're not hosted on his site anymore.

They're hosted by the dude below, a true & selfless patron imo. He's got a sweet-ass collection of dj/live mixes hosted so check his archive out and show some love.
http://sound.modelfruit.com/
http://sound.modelfruit.com/mission.html

Links are in the titles.
I don't think I'm stepping on any toes here by posting, they were uploaded by Rob himself and he encouraged actively sharing them at the time. BUT - if for some reason the Abletons (or any other relevant party) frown on this or any links provided I'll edit the post (into nothingness if needs be).

PS: Obviously if you're not into dance music//beat orientated electronic music none of this will appeal to you.
PPS: I gave Number Six some heavy replay at the time.
PPPS: Turn it up.

Nice one for posting these. Robs sets are like a re-education in why you should love electronic dance music.

Looking forward to checking this out.

On the subject of "stop DJ worship!", I was giving this a thought this weekend, and I'll admit I'm way out of the loop on this one, but I think DJ worship has been slowing way down. Piggybacking off my legacy artist thread, I can't think of any new DJ that is really packing places that isn't a local except for the standard Digweeds and Tiestos of the world. When I was going out more to DJ nights I would usually just know the genre and hope for the best as far as the DJ was concerned, aside from a few locals I knew of.

Are there any new DJs that are filling venues nationally or internationally on just their name alone? And don't say Deadmua5 because he's not a DJ.

My friend, who is a "retired" DJ, and I were also laughing about how placing the DJ's home turf on a flier somehow gives them more street cred. "Beats Me (SF)", nevermind I that I don't spin anywhere noteworthy in SF. Is this practice still continuing?

Yeah that still seems to work lol. It's the same kinda thing as putting a mix online "Ikeaboy live in Amsterdam" which may well have the location right.... but fails to detail the tiny venue and the crowd consisting of a handfull of bemused friends of the friend who set the whole thing up. LIVE IN AMSTERDAM BABY!

Ha! Then there's the practice of following the hometown with the half dozen crews and labels the DJ belongs to that nobody has heard of.

heh, this is the kind of reaction I was banking on :)

I checked out Vacant/Engaged - Minute 6ish.... I can't discern what's being played. I recognise alot of the originals he selects for his mixes, and if you do too you'll notice that he's not a Fade A into B type of DJ. A lot of the time he's putting his own beats down over tweaked and layered phrases taken from the songs listed. I don't know how he's performing nowadays, but he used a couple of MPCs last time I geeked out and looked up his techniques - which should give you a hint as to what kind of DJ he is, imo.
So...I think it's not always as simple as "Kool song, what is it I wonder?" Best you can do is look up the tracks listed for around that time zone. Hope that helps.

Don't forget the local promoters who pay big names to play at a venue, do the warm up, and plaster their own name all over the poster alongside 'Mr Big from X' - that's my favourite! Great way to pad your performance CV.

:)

And I have yet to see this on a flyer, but I've seen countless blogs, bios, and bulletins announcing "Opened for Big Name DJ". Yeah you opened for them, buddy...at 7:30…with 12 other DJs wedged between you and the headliner.

A friend of mine went to a wedding last month where the DJ brought along a hype man who announced who was "in the mix" every so often and he proceeded to DJ megamixes. Nobody at a wedding wants to hear 20 second snippets of hits played one after the other. Just play the full damn songs. Maybe I'll put "Fresh off the Russell wedding!" on my next flyer.
