Techno kick bass - Sandwell,Liebling,Ruskin,Detroit etc.
How does one recreate these detroit style bass lines heard on tracks made by the afore mentioned?
It's always a bass that sits under the kick almost sounding like the lower end of the kick itself.
They always manage to make it flow and groove with and against the kick also.
I can get decent results using a sine and equing out higher frequencies, bit of side chain and compression but can never get it to groove well.
It always sounds quite muddy too even if I eq alot away from the bottom of the kick.
Tip really appreciated.
Thanks.

depends of course, but infact these subby "bass" hits are often low-pitched toms to the point where you barely notice that its a drum and no synth bass. You should try it, since i started using tom samples for some basses, they dont sound that undefined and still have a soft, drummy character which helps to keep the bassline very straight and forward going.

Also, try NOT putting the bass under the kick.
Example:
Kick on 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4
Bass on 1.1.3, 1.2.3, 1.3.3, 1.4.3
If you have a low, powerful kick, and the bass running in between it, this can create the groove and sound (I think) you are asking about.

EQ your kick to allow the bass to sit under it. There are no MAGIC EQ settings that will work every time. You just have to use your ears... It also helps to have it not sit exactly right on top of each other like the contact explained.
You just have to think where you want each sound to be in the mix and EQ accordingly. Filters help to too. Just dont get too destructive ..
btw : Usually using a low freq sine wave will help

also to get that wide 'warehouse' low end, stick a huge catherdral-style reverb after a filtered down kick. bit of compression, maybe even some saturation, more EQ (taking out the boom and the top).. render that and stick it in a sampler. program around your kick, and it will give you that 'techno-grind'. it can also subtly fill out any empty space in the low end, even if you have an existing bass, depending on the amount of saturation and style of Eq etc!

Got this answer from another forum and must say it's fantastic for that rumble.
Playing with the reverb's pre delay also helps with the groove of the rumble.

Can you give a link to a music to listen to what genre and what kick/bass you re talking about? I'm curious...

I think this uses the reverb trick.
