drum rack velocity question

Post by cut160 » Mon Dec 17, 2007 11:28 pm

when i drop a sample on a pad in a drum rack it is by default non velocity sensitive, does anyone know how to change this as a default setting ? it's really time consuming to adjust the vel. sens. slider in all the simplers which correspond to the pads.
also , when you you hit a pad the sound gets only played as long as you keep it pressed. can this be changed so it needs only a short hit and plays all the way through ?

thanks

1. you can save 'default settings' for all devices..
see the manual for detailed instructions..

you can also apply settings to the same parameters by using the contextual 'copy value to siblings'

2. no I don't think so..

Both Simpler and Sampler do not react to Midi Velocity as it seems. They will always play at the fixed volume you set in Simpler/Sampler. I don't like that, but mayb you can setup some "Gain" plugin to react to velocity automations.

:?
you can set/adjust the velocity with the velocity parameter..

simplers in drum racks have 0 velocity by default for various reasons but you can definitely set them to respond to it..

Thanks for the hint! I already wondered what this parameter is good for, but had no time to look into the manual yet. I'm stupid! :D

@ Cut160: When you drop a sample onto a Drum Rack an instance of Simpler is created holding your sample. Simpler offers a parameter/box called "Velocity" which default to 0%. Turn this to 100% to have full Note On Velocity control.

yes saw the velocity slider .. but imagine if you drop a set of 20 percussion sounds on the drum rack und you have to adjust sensitivity on each of the simplers... that's why i was asking. isn't there another way to do this ?
also that you have to press the pad for as long as you want the sound to be played is really annoying. imagine a real long 808 bassdrum that you want to hit from time to time and you have to hold it for a second just to make it fully play out. can't the pads be set like in battery or something ?
i spent some more time with it but really couldn't figure out how to do it..strange.

Just PLEASE read up on the defaults feature, as Poster said from the beginning. This is easy

Yes, this is a really crappy feature of simpler/sampler. A 'oneshot' play mode would be most appreciated (as would a timestrech feature!!!).

However, as a workaround use the note-length MIDI plugin before the simpler/sampler that you want to play long samples. This works

Just set Simplers Sustain to 0 dB and Release to several seconds (depending on the length of your clip). Voila, even a 1/32 note will play the full sample length. As long as the "R" button is activated it will be cut of by any successing note on the same pad though (to save CPU load). If you disable the "R" button several voices of the same note (default 6) will overlay, but CPU load will rise correspondingly.

At this point you really should grab the manual and at least read the short paragraph about Simpler and how to save presets as Defaults in Drum Racks. Also have a look at this: right-click on any Simpler setting and chose "Copy to siblings" (or so), it will copy the value of this setting to all other instances of Simpler in a Rack.

well i must be dumb or something :) i really am the person that reads the manual before going to boards and asking questions and i usually do find what i need by reading things up...
the thing is, i adjusted simpler the way i want it to act (so it reacts to velocity and plays the sample all the way through) when i it loads. that works very well when i load simpler ... but : when i drop a sample on a drum rack pad and a instance of simpler gets loaded by drum rack, it doesn't load with my specified default settings.
what i want by default is: i open up a drum rack, drop a sample on a pad and when i hit the pad it reacts to velocity and play the full sample.

sorry for asking again , but i really don't get where i want even with the manual..

saving defaults for Simpler is for solo instances of Simpler only, not for simplers inside drum racks..

goto: Library/Defaults/Dropping Samples/On Drum Rack
drag the default setting for Simpler in that 'On Drum Rack' folder..

when you now drag a sample on a drum rack pad it uses your custom Simpler settings..

but again; reading what people say in this thread and the manual isn't a bad thing either..

cheers..

thank you ! sorry i did read what people said here and i also checked the manual several times. i just didn't get that you can copy those presets from one folder to another. (especially to the simpler preset to the "on drum rack" folder)
anyway, thanks for the help guys :)

Yes you can have the Defaults pertain to either the Drum Racks or the track view (using the "On Track View" folder inside Dropping Samples"). I have identical setups saved for both, so no matter what I always get the same default Simpler.

Also no extra plugs are required for Simpler to play in one-shot mode, simply turn the Sustain knob all the way up.

Sampler has a one-shot mode now, it's in the 'loop' dropdown of the envelope, called trigger mode, or something similar. I haven;t got the app open right now.
