Whats the best virtualization for win7 in linux for live?
hello,
has anyone tried to run live in linux? does wine or virtualbox work? what about the performance?
i am writing a new topic because the virtualization technology advances fast and i hope that there are new results...
best,

Re: Whats the best virtualization for win7 in linux for live?
there is a linux distro called a/v linux they have a forum too, also the ubuntuforum under ubuntustudio is helpful too.. things you'll need to know , what version of wine to use , if on ubuntu or debian linux where to download wineasio , also see if you can get a rt kernel for the distro your on , i know reaper works ok in wine , but i had no luck with it personally , i have a firewire interface so i got alot of xruns kinda like pops and clicks in windows land . you may want to try some linux based audio software such as ardour(audio daw) , hydrogen(drumsamper daw) , they are alot of fun to use too . you have to learn a liitle about running jack and qjackctrl before you start your audio software too jack is the linux audio server it gets you audio interface or soundcard running and also is like rewire meaning you can connect ardour to hydrogen or reaper to ardour etc etc.., last but not least.. good luck getting ableton to work in wine, when i buy my launchpad , im gonna experiment with the launchpad version and try to get it working on ubuntu with wine.
Re: Whats the best virtualization for win7 in linux for live?
My experience using Wine 1.3.12 on Debian sid:
* Audio performance is bad unless you use wineasio and JACK
* GUI performance is laggy unless you use the DIB engine patch
* Most things involving temporary files don't work at all, e.g. recording and rendering
* Max for Live devices won't be displayed correctly, i.e. the elements flicker and disappear completely
So it's usable enough for some tinkering around, but too buggy for serious work.

thanks for that explanation! will try with wine and your recommended packages. but if rendering doesn't work, it will be kind of pointless..
