Low performance and Disk Access on Macbook pro Core i7??

Post by LAgota » Fri Dec 10, 2010 8:28 pm

Hi, (while I wait the ableton team support feedback)
I recently bought Live 8 and installed in a new macbook pro core i7 with 2.66ghz
4gb Ram , generic 5400 rpm hitachi hard disk built-in, my
OSX is Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
I have some performance issues with ridiculous small projects, for example warping audio files playing audio , or moving/dragging a group of clips makes live go slow and show disk access and disk overload lights. Im talking about a project with 5 or 6 clips and ANY plugin or external instrument. Only audio clips in High Quality mode but only a few. I m quite disappointed with Live performance in such a powerfull computer. I ve read that it s better to have your clips in an external drive but i m talking about very very little projects where live goes bad in my system.
I ve tryed many things like, same problem with my external
firewire soundcard or the built in mac soundcard. i have tried with
only two short clips in a project and i have the same issues.
have made like 5 hardware test to the macbook and 5 more to the hard
disk and everything in the hardware is ok. I tried with wifi On/off AC
plugged or with the battery etc, the resull is always the same. Firewall ON/OFF I have
also reinstalled Live, have other audio soft like Logic pro or
Maschine installed and working fine in this computer so I don t
understand what's this.

Any feedback will be apreciated
Many Thanks

First of all, it's definitely better to have your audio on the internal drive. The days of external drives being prefered ended with Windows 95. So, on that note, is your HD getting full? Are these MP3's you're using? What soundcard do you have, and what do you have it's latency set to?

I'm not using an i7 Mbpro, but the previous model.
I was having a real hard time until i realised my version of live7 was for powerPC. I'd assumed it was a Universal app, but apparently not. Live runs like a breeze now.
Could that help you guys ?

Hey thanks, I looked at the 'about Live' specs and it says for Mac.. I have improvement though after I updated Live, but still every once in a while, while playing back multiple audio tracks the orange 'D' light will come on, audio will stop and then continue, but cpu stays below 7%, it doesnt jump or anything.. I also noticed that a fresh computer restart really reduces the problem.. Hey wait, I used a firewire interface with Live just today, and I dont recall having this problem. I will do some more tests tomorrow with the interface and a fresh restart and hopefully Live wont do the big 'D' problem.. I can't have this happen to me in a real live situation, so much testing will be done before I dare use it live.

Could be a RAM thing - open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342

How much free space on your harddisk?

What were you using, when not using the firewire interface?

Hey thanks. I read up on the memory thing.. I had 11MB page out, and 45mb free, and 1.46 GB inactive.. Based on my study of the article for suggested reading, inactive memory staying inactive means there is no immediate demand for it.. So back to square one.. I have probably 8-10 audio tracks. I cant get through a single song without the dreaded "D" light coming on and all audio dropping. I still can NOT use ableton live, in a live arrangement and Im totally burning out on this problem.. I will look around to see if its just me.. If it is, then its this stupid seagate hybrid drive.. Thanks

You're welcome! Hopefully that'll fix your issues (still could be something else - complex stuff...)

Welp, installed the new hard drive today, and tested tonight, and guess what. NO MORE PROBLEMS! THATS RIGHT! NOT A SINGLE BELCH, PAUSE, FART, OR EVEN A CRACKLE! NOTHING ZERO ZIP WITH SEVERAL HOURS OF TESTING AND RECORDING.
