Popping or clicking noise in audio device rack

Post by wilsonrx » Mon Apr 04, 2011 8:21 am

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help with a problem I am having. I have an audio device rack and am using the chain selector to switch between devices. As I move the chain selector I can hear a quiet but noticeable clicking/popping/distortion sound as the device rack moves between the zones/devices.

I am running Ableton Live 8.2.1 on a Macbook Pro (latest model). CPU usage is around 10%. I have tried changing the audio buffer size but this made no difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Ableton Support can help you out with this.

Send a message to [email protected] and include an Ableton Status Report.

You can create one by going to the Help menu in Live, then selecting "Get Support" Here you will see a link to your most current Status Report. Click the link and attach the resulting file to your email along with the description you mentioned here in the forum.

(PS: Update to Live 8.2.2 - it's free and might help with your current issue)

Ok thanks - I will give them a try.

I've upgraded to 8.2.2 but no luck.

So I have no reply from support yet - not sure if I will ever get one.

However, after doing some more experimentation I have more info on the problem.

The noise still occurs even on a device rack that has no effects in it as long as there are four or more zones.

So I can take an empty audio device rack, create 4 chains, select to "Distribute Ranges Equally", map my midi controller to the device chain selector and once I start moving the control - there is the noise.

It seems to be a bug with the audio device rack itself, although I am surprised nobody else has noticed this?

Really interested to know if anyone else has this problem?

All you need to do is add 1 audio device rack, add 5 chains to it, space them out evenly using "Distribute Ranges Equally", press play then move the orange bar on the device chain zone selector.

I can't be the only person who has noticed this bug.

So I have had a reply from Ableton and unfortunately it seems like I am stuck with the problem :

"Hi Rob,

thanks for your detailed bug description.

I could reproduce this issue here and tracked it a bit more down and filed a bug. However, this is nothing new and has been valid since we had rack chains and the possibility of switching between them. At the moment, I can't say when we'll have time to address this issue and provide a fix.

You could check if creating range crossfades might help getting rid of the crackles. Please see the Live manual, chapter 17.5.4, for information on that. Please note that using the crossfades isn't a real workaround, it might just be that it masks the phenomenon for specific situations if you need to switch chains in realtime.

Hi
I have a similar problem - just upgraded system to the following (but PC):
Windows 7
M Audio Audiophile 192 - 192kHz PCI Soundcard
Intel CPU Core i7 870 2.93GHz
Asus Motherboard P7P55D-E Intel

checked all the drivers etc. even had IT specialist look at it, CPU is fine but having issues with small popping - I can be running just a few channels with minimal fx and limiting etc and get this lovely popping.
Am I overlooking something??????
