Piano Roll Scale Selector

Post by crumhorn » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:39 pm

It would make MIDI editing a lot simpler it was possible to select a scale in the piano roll editor.

All notes not in the selected scale should be folded away - or greyed out if it already contains a note

Ideally you would have access to all the scales you have in the library for the Scale MIDI effect

I agree, it would be great! But there is a cheaters way to do it. You can write every note in the scale and move those off to the side, then fold it. Not ideal, I know.

Personally I just use the midi scale effect and dont worry about what note I'm actually putting in there. The scale effect is a GODSEND :D

hey Seattle been looking at that effect but now i think i understand it
what i am understanding thanks to your post
is that if i set in a scale efx midi before the instrument
it maps the pentatonic scale to my midi keyboard as c major and then just transcribe em to pentatonic

yes, exactly. actually i made a youtube tutorial on how cool the scale effect is now.

if you set the the scale with the plugin to "c pentatonic" scale it will allow you to play that scale as if its c-major scale (i.e. ALL WHITE KEYS!). When you play one of the black keys it will just made reduntant notes (one of the notes already being played by the white keys after the scale effect is enabled).

When you're in the piano roll it treats it the same way. The blacknotes are redundant. So you don't have to worry about what notes your actually putting in.. But if you want to correct it later you can actually set up a new midi track and have it recieve the midi (post effect) from the track with the scale effect on it. Then you will have the true midi for that scale, with all the right notes.

But really if your just working on it in live, it doesn't matter if the notes on your piano roll are true or not.. it's going to sound the same either way. Hopefully I'll get this tutorial up tonight, and include a link, if not ill send you a PM tomorrow :D

It still would be good to integrate scales into the piano roll interface though, more as an aid editing and composing with the mouse. You could turn it on and off or change scale while editing (without effecting notes you already programmed) to allow modulating to a different key or creating dissonant chords.

It would just be a variation on the fold function.

Would be nice to insert a selected chord type with one click into piano roll.

The midi chord tool is nice, but I can't play only one type of chord.
No! I'll never use the Push-App Live 9 !!!
