I have pockets of warring factions of hair on my head and if the length gets over an inch and I don't put some kind gel product in it, it looks bad messy. I don't mean hip bed head messy. I mean homeless person messy. About 6 months ago I decided when I go to the barber I just tell them to put the half inch attachment on the clippers and be done with it. So freeing. So low maintenance.

I also once sported the long dyed black rocker/goth hair for about a decade. So I can either pull off super long or super short. No inbetween...can't do that shaggy long 60's/70's crap that's back in style now.

i look like someone gave me a cruel joke haircut while i slept.

it's fine for what seems like a week after getting it cut but then reverts to type.

and i can't be arsed to get it cut every week.

beats me - that sounds like a plan with the half inch clipper barber solution thing. i will be free!

Give it a try. Worst case scenario it doesn't work for you but your hair grows back. But I also reached the age when I no longer care about the ultra in style haircut but I also don't want to look like a homeless person.

I also went through a phase when I wore hats a lot because I couldn't bother with my hair but at some point I stopped because hats just started feeling awkward, unnatural and heavy on my head.

Is the bald thing even in style anymore and has just been downgraded to something guys should do if they're balding?

I don't see too many dudes walking around with a bald head anymore but when I do you can usually tell from the shadow they were balding to begin with.
