How am I going to record a piece of audio? Any portable instruments available?

Lots. Several people I know have these and seem to like them. If you can say more about what you're trying to do, it might be possible to recommend something else.

Sony d50 - unbeatable!

if you are on a lower budget then i like the zoom h4n - if you have a massive budget and not so portable as the hand held recorders then aaton cantar x -
