Support for all MIDI controllers?
Support for all MIDI controllers?
There is one simple solution to enable support for any controller or any software that sends MIDI: Make a MIDI implementation chart for all Live devices!
And not just 8 parameters, ALL of them.
There are 16 times 128 CC messages in the MIDI specification. That is more than enough to cover all the parameters on a device like Operator.
Select a device, control it from any MIDI controller - or more importantly - any combination of MIDI controllers without having to "MIDI Learn" a single parameter.
That is what I call AutoMap!
Editors note: This post is different from the one I originally posted over 2 years ago. The request is still the same. Just simplified.

Yeah. it'd be great to see this happen. I'm sure there's a lot of Faderfox users (arguably more than Novation users, esp. in Europe) on this forum that would say yes to this.
Abes if you are listening I think this could become one of the killer features of Live (for performance and for production) and would differentiate Live from a lot of competing DAWs/live tools.

Re: Support for all MIDI controllers?
hey such a big post without any or im proud of youhoffman2k wrote:Ableton has been very kind to unofficially support a feature that allows us to make an automapping template for our own controllers.
But compared to the features that are available to novation SL and mackie controller users, the currently implemented map is a joke.
We cant navigate around. We cant add custom LCD's or LED's to our controllers for use with Live.
We can not even make a controller map to map to editing functions like copy, paste,....
There are company's like Faderfox who have done more for Live users then any other manufacturer. Isn't it time that Ableton returned the favor to the "smaller" people.
Either native support for popular controllers like this or full support for any controller would be a step in the right direction.
We need to be able to (auto)map CC's and Note's. (at least)
So that the users can work together to increase the number of supported controllers.
There are more controllers out there then Ableton will ever be able to support.
If Ableton makes an effort to give us the tools we need to do it ourselves...
Then soon we'll actually be able to control Live LIVE.
So thats why I started this poll.
Not to force Ableton into doing this. But to show them that they have many users that want to see this "unofficial" feature become one of the most useful features of Live.
The groundwork and the concept is there. All we need now is a lot of votes to show Ableton what the users need.
And yes i agree with you.

Like you said ableton will not be able to support all controllers anyway (It just ain't gonna happen).
Let us build our own and ableton can concentrate on providing the right tools to do this (I'd prefer it this way, so that I can customize it to the way I decide is best for me).
What does MEH mean ?
MacBook MacOS Live 9.7.1 Max for Live Push Logic
it would be nice if everything was 'automatic', but at least here's what I'd like for pushbuttons:
0) Turn the midi map overlay on.
1) Click a control in Live, push a button on your controller.
2) Something prompts to the effect of 'what do you want the Live control to do-- turn off, turn on, go up, go down, go left, go right' (where these would be apropos to the control in question).
3) Then, if one of the down/up/right/left value options was chosen 'by how much?".
4) Then "Do you want it to stay that way until the next press, or do you want it to toggle back to the original state when you lift your finger up?"
5) Then a prompt: 'To add this behavior to more controls, click "add more", then click those, then click "Done". Otherwise, just click "Done".
Also, you could assign multiple pushbuttons to the same control, one to turn it up, one to turn it down.
[edit] i feel I am somewhat geeky, not ubergeeky, but still geeky enough-- even so the whole "relative bitwise signed complement" thing makes me dizzy.
