I got 12 and I’m still having this exact same issue. Works fine without an external display but is unbearably slow with one connected. Considering I practically use my Macbook as if it were a desktop, this is an unworkable situation for me. Only thing that works is having QuickTime running doing a screen recording but that’s an absurd workaround.

Did you try other screen resolutions?

this was literally what was happening for me, even down to the quicktime thing. But between updating to latest Sonoma and Live 12, the issues have resolved. I travel and have used probably 4 different external monitors since the upgrades and have not had a problem. Cue furious knocking on wood.

And possibly try other framerates? i.e. ProMotion on/off etc?

Yes I tried messing with hi-dpi on/off, different resolutions, different refresh rates. I am running the latest macOS and an updated Live (I’m on the trial but that should not be significant).

I am using a 27” 2560*1440 Dell Ultrathin S2719 display that can do 60 or 75Hz. It’s connected over usb-c. Any other program runs fine, it’s just Live that is unworkable.

Maybe you've mentioned this before but please check if both displays are set to "Default" resolution in the macOS Displays System Settings

Upgrading to Live 12 DID NOT resolve the issue for me! Still dealing with GUI lag.
I'm on the latest sonoma (14.4.1).
The only thing that makes the issue go away is closing my laptop so that i'm only using the external monitor. so basically i can't run both displays without getting the lag.

I upgraded to Live 12 and still having this issue! And still had no response from Ableton's support. I's so frustrating! To make it worse I connected my new bluetooth Logi lift vertical mouse (wich is compatible with mac and worked great with my older one) and it doesn't read it. I'm stack with music production with my new workstation.. ufff%^&&*^!

Do you have any option to try with another type of connection, e.g HDMI?

I am experiencing this hanging/freezing GUI bug (Ableton 12) when I have an external display (In Extended Display Mode) hooked up to my Macbook Pro (M3 Pro, 36GB RAM). The audio playback is fine but the GUI becomes unusable while the external display is plugged in.

I found a temporary solution to this issue:

1. Go to MacOS system Settings
2. Navigate to "Displays"
3. Select the external monitor from the top of the "Displays" screen
4. Change the "Use as" dropdown from "Extended display" to "Main Display" - the issue is now fixed.
5. Toggle "Main Display" back to "Extended display" (how it was originally) - the issue remains fixed.

Unfortunately this only works until you restart the machine, then it must be done again.

Edit: after testing a bit more, I am experiencing this issue intermittently in applications other than Ableton, so i don't think this is an Ableton issue.
Edit 2: i have my external display set up so it is not it's own Space, so there is no menu bar. if I drag Ableton down the height of the menu bar, the freezing completely goes away :? . Going into Fullscreen also solves the issue. Alternatively just closing my laptop lid and letting the external display be the Main Display works as well.

I will definitely try this! Thank you very much. I hope it works.

I am using the default resolution and scale of the external display and it helped with the freezing, but it is uncomfortable because it is too small for working, so I have to zoom the Ableton a lot. But when I'm on internet everything is so small! I was considering buying a better HDMI cable (I saw some faster ones on amazon), maybe that solved the problem?

Thank you again for your advice.
