I have sleep apnea (and have a CPAP machine for breathing at night) and have some narcoleptic tendencies (i.e. often drop off with no warning watching TV etc) - fortunately I'm not a smoker or I would have burned the house down by now. With my other medical issues, since I have been unemployed, waking up is more of a problem than sleeping. Although listening to death metal and the likes of Marilyn Manson not really recommended, I used to wake up with really realistic nightmares that freaked me out. Something like Enya or the Slowdive album works much better as a sleep aid.

The one thing that I always stay awake in is a car - driving, or a passenger I cannot relax due to the amount of really terrible idiot drivers.

When I was in college, I was a DJ at the student radio station. I used to play industrial and dark ambient music and read poetry or horror stories over it. I would tell the audience to leave their radios on when they went to bed so I could provide the soundtrack to their nightmares (I played the midnight to 3 AM slot). I don't know how many takers I had but I had lots of fun doing it.

I used to listen to things like Dead Can Dance, spacey Cocteau Twins and the like to fall asleep myself. I can't stand having a TV on when I sleep - the talking voices always wake me up.

I used to rent a house (with 3 other guys) off a dodgy landlord called Yusef Lateef when I was a student in London.

Crappy damp house, poor heating, and with dodgy electrics done by his cousin on the cheap (with no permits or inspections of course). The bugger charged 160 quid a week for his crap house back in the 90s. The one good thing was that we were 2 doors down from the local nick, so no break-ins. This also meant no loud music or drugs parties on the flip side though :(

Yeah, I'm one of those that tends to get wrapped up in music if it's on, so I find it very counter-intuitive to sleep. Even chill ambient just gets me all analytical, so I need quiet or some kind of white noise (fan, open window, etc) to sleep.

I feel you. As a passenger I can't relax... Idiot drivers are exponentially rising!
