Invisible Children is a legitimate organization as far as I'm concerned. I support them.

Yeah he sums it up nicely. Quite honestly the self congratulatory nature of the documentary I've seen is enough to turn me off.
Everyone I know knows about Kony, and everyone knows there's no easy answers to this. That area of Africa will not all of a sudden bloom into a peaceful mecca of prosperity once Kony is captured, there's a larger puzzle to solve there. Kony is a psycho for sure, but I don't have warm fuzzies about Invisible Children.

"Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that.

Yeah I threw up in my mouth a little.
That pretty much sums it up right there, a bunch of self righteous arrogant kids thinking they can save the world and play soldier as well as super cool guy saviors. Not at all knowing what they're getting themselves involved in, and in my eyes not caring. I sincerely hope the worst for them.

Great piece by a journalist who actually went there to get the story. Fantastic piece of journalism. Explains the history of the LRA, the horrors they perpetrate, the sketchiness of the Ugandan army hunting Kony, and the plight of the villagers caught in between. Must read if you're interested in the subject.

Blog post on Invisible Children. Not exactly a great "charity". People should know what they're getting into.

finally, it's about time white hipsters showed up to solve all of Africa's problems with a social media awareness campaign. Clicktivism is an important tool in giving privileged white kids the illusion that they are doing something beneficial to the world with the minimum of personal risk or effort. Analogous to the Occupy movement, it's a case of: you can generate all the publicity you want, but once everyone's watching, you need something more to offer than a tactic for generating publicity.

also, this type of post is why there is a Lounge section specifically designated for these types of posts, considering that it has nothing to do with music production tips and/or tricks.

I work with a Ugandan organization called Hope North (hopenorth.org) which provides housing, food, education and healing to former child soldiers and orphans. Here is a 20 minute film about the school, it features an original score by Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys (bringing it back to the ableton forum!). Ugandans helping Ugandans.

Hope you enjoy and if so please share as wide as you can. Hope North is small and grassroots, the school needs as much support as it can get.
