Try this: Open Ableton - open the audio hardware preferences, and remove your soundcard from the device list, leaving no sound card active. close out of Ableton, and restart it. When you restart it, then go back and put the soundcard where it's supposed to be. Should reset your soundcard in ableton....

I record loops in stereo, and hits in mono most of the time. I just keep an eye on the stereo field of the drum loops in relation to the rest of the material in the mix, making sure everything is balanced. Unless I'm going all whacked out with the drums :)

This works the same way with my Alesis Fusion 6HD as well as with my micron, unless you sync to them [as you've stated] I don't like working like that either though.
