So far 7.0.3 + maxurl patch (as shared by Rory) seems to be stable on my Win 7 64bits machine.
With both Live 9.1.x and the latest Live 9.2 beta.
It looks promising.

By the way, maxurl was introduced with Max 6.1.7 in april 2014.

There is a new update to the free J74 HarmoTools device set.
The new version (1.4) has the following changes:

- Scale recognition (guess) has been improved
- New devices added for analyzing and displaying chords and scales on a guitar layout.

Just a little side note: since 7.0.2 you can authorize Max 7 as Max for Live engine/editor without owning a standalone version of Max.

I can understand your frustration, specially as a new Ableton/M4L user.
For now, until something really changes on the way Live and Max for Live interact with the Windows OS (something only Abe and Cycling can improve as it is in the main code, not on the patches), is to *workaround ...

Anyway, to anyone on Windows (specially 7): just give a try to the procedure specified above (in my previous post).

Ableton developers pointed out in the beta forum that there is one crash situation on Windows which they do recognize (and are working on - so it was reported):

At M4L initialization (that is: when you start M4L for the *first time* since Live was open, so with the *black* Max for Live logo popping ...

- Max for Live (see description above)
- Standalone App (working via MIDI, usable without Max for Live - and actually even without Live....)

With Max for Live devices there is no actual installation, apart of course the one-off installation of Max itself.

So as one-off:
- You install Max/MSP/Jitter (currently version recommended is 6.1.9)
- You install Ableton Live (Suite or Standard + Max for Live license)
