Re: Dubstep Scratch and Bwahh

Actually I like dubstep. Or at least some dubstep tracks. Its just become kind of a cliche. It reminds of me trance. There were a few seminal trance tracks that became templates for a never ending stream of commercial trance records. It effectively ended trance as a genre as it seems no serious arti...

Re: Dubstep Scratch and Bwahh

P.S. rock music isn't a type of music, its just a template. And hip-hop isn't a genre, its a donkey with 3 legs. To me dubstep is breakbeat. Minus dynamic range. That doesn't constitute a genre. I have heard nothing in dubstep I havent heard in what was once called breakbeat years ago. But as those...

Re: Dubstep Scratch and Bwahh

Dubstep isnt a type of music or a genre, its a production template. I havent really looked into exactly how people make dubstep (as Im not that interested) but i suspect it involves: Can you communicate with words or only pictures? I will change my mind about dubstep when someone makes the second d...

Re: How to make a dub siren in Operator?

I feel like Im taking crazy pills. I know what Dub is as a genre and I know what the word means, but... Why is the word DUB used on EVERY TUTORIAL EVER??? It doesn't mean anything. I watched a friggin' 20 min tutorial on 'Dub Reverb' to find out what the hell dub reverb is only to find out 'Dub Reve...

Dubstep isnt a type of music or a genre, its a production template. I havent really looked into exactly how people make dubstep (as Im not that interested) but i suspect it involves: 1) A Sample CD of percussion loops or a set of dubsteppy drum hits. 2) A synth that makes squarewaves modulated with ...

Re: Which Ableton plugins do you never use?

The vocoder.

It either makes something that sounds OK, but a cliché, or crap.

Re: How to make "french bass guitar sound"?

Sounds to me like an old fashioned 1 sample midi sequence using some slap bass sample. Same way they used to make cartridge game soundtracks to save space. If you wanna makes sounds like that you should probably find anything that references old midi soundtrack production. You can get VSTs people ha...

Ive used it a fair bit and didn't like it. Aliasing was unacceptable, even at highest quality.

Re: What is your take on using snippets of other artist's music?

Seems sampling is a lot like graffiti. People argue about whether it is art or defacing peoples property without realizing can be both.

You can be artistic and rip someone off at the same time.

Re: Punchy kicks?

Sure. I would recommend not using a compressor but rather de-construct the kick. Find one sample that has the bottom end you like, low pass it. Find another than has a click you like, add a fast delay to its envelope. Layer the two. Then you can directly control the click and boom characteristics wi...

Re: Cleaning Up A Muddy Bass?

I've notice with many softsynths the bass characteristics go out the window when you bring in high freq content (e.g. when the filter is more open) That being the case if I make a bass sound, it is often the mid range part I make. Then I take the same preset, remove anything like detuning / chorus, ...

Re: What is your take on using snippets of other artist's music?

if he had one, he would have used it, same frame of mind, different era... that this happened is well documented fact...but i think they were paying homage, and going with what 'worked' I think comparing Bach to Beastie boys is just stupid. What Bach did was more like you listening to a track and l...

Re: Punchy kicks?

There's nothing wrong in processing the dynamics of a sample. My issue isnt with the idea of compressing anything, including samples. Its that 'add a compressor' is like generic advice given to people when they put together a percussion track, but if the percussion track is made from samples taken ...
