I personally wouldn't be very proud of distributing yet another release that ought to be considered pre 1.0 beta code.
Sorry Ableton but your product sucks. It's an absolute CPU/resource hog, not to mention plugin compatibility is iffy and random at best - regardless of platform. I've put ...

Alright, who mentioned OS X 10.3 in there rant and rave!?!?!
I did a search on "Panther" cause Live doesn't seem to want to start under 10.3. & I ended up in this 1986 doomsdayers of the mac board. I'm sure glad Apple is taking so long to go out of business, otherwise I'd never get anything done!

This "VST Plugin problem is OS X's Fault" is a bunch of sh*t
I've been watching this forum wondering if someone would bring to light why version 2.x and above hates almost every plugin other than it's own at random times, and with random plugins.
I've followed evey bit of advice, and finally, only because I have a project that I really want to get finished ...

2.x crashes
I think 2.0-2.0.3 is just plain not ready for prime time, bug city! I've found that going back to 1.5 is much more stable, AND all my VST plugins seem to work again under 1.5. Some of them just don't show up in 2.

CPU Toilet
I don't think its OSX, although Aqua will feel sluggish at times on OSX, the actual OS itself runs circles around 9 for stability and speed.
Live is the only app in my audio collection that ever behaves like this. I can even have Cubase SX & Reason wired together and don't see the drain that crops ...

You're right on your assumption Ben, the problem lies in OSX itself, not neccesarily the application you're using. 10.2.3 was supposed to fix this issue. Apple addresses only 11 & 22 khz recording, 44.1 is a pain in my ass on occasion tho as well.
