Re: Upgrade to Macbook pro 2015

You could add an external SSD connected to the Thunderbolt port (Lacie make one). That would give you very decent disk speeds without using up a USB port.

Re: Mac Users: AU or VST in Ableton?

It might not be a consideration for you but if you want your live sets to be compatible with Live running on a PC (assuming the same plugins are available on both machines) then it's necessary to use the VST versions. I always used to assume that I would only ever use Macs but now I use both a MacBo...

Re: New Macbook Pro

The new MacBook Pro does look nice but it's very expensive for what it is. I agonized long and hard about whether to upgrade or not but in the end I decide to keep my MacBook Air 11" i7 for mobile stuff and buy a PC for heavy lifting when at home. For less than the price of a new MacBook Pro I ...

That review is eerily accurate, I hope so much that someone from Apple reads it.

By the way @Pitch Black - Filtered Senses is superb.

Collaboration in South London, dub, dub techno, ambient

Hi,

I'm trying to find people to collaborate with in the London area, part remote and part meet-up, working on dub, dub techno and ambient styles with a view to releasing stuff online and playing small venues.

If you're interested then let's talk,

Joe

Re: My reason of not buying the Push Controller

And if you don't need the motorised faders then consider an Akai MidiMix - they're only £60 instead of £200 for the BCF2000 and they feel pretty solid and just work. Very basic though, just pots rather than encoders and short throw faders but a lot of controls for the price, especially if you're buy...

Re: My reason of not buying the Push Controller

Although not a perfect solution, you could simply build up a huge control surface by putting LaunchPads side by side and Behringer BCF2000s underneath each one. Still relatively cheap, includes 100mm motorised faders and will happily give you 32 tracks of control. This would cost roughly £350 per ea...

Best way to recall snapshots of a whole Live set

I seem to recall that someone made a Max device that let you record snapshots of the setup of your live set. I'm thinking of the kind of thing where you went a bit made twiddling stuff while playing live and even though you've unmuted it, you can't figure out why your kick drum isn't playing etc. an...

Is it possible to run non-armed tracks at higher latency

You know how Logic will play all the non-armed tracks at higher latency to allow the CPU to compute further ahead and reduce the load on the processor (I think Reaper does the same thing too and now Pro-Tools as of the last release). Live doesn't do this to the best of my knowledge but I was wonderi...

Re: Is Apple losing its way in music tech?

I've been a staunch Mac user since 2006 and I'm currently watching to see what comes out this year as I'm due for a new machine. I mainly use Live and Omnisphere 2 plus a few other plugins so CPU power matters quite a lot to me. I also prefer not to freeze if I can avoid it. I'm torn between getting...

Re: 3rd party Plugins recommendations thanks:-)

The whole bundle has some interesting stuff in there but for me EchoBoy stands far above the rest. Decapitator is okay but less interesting than a number of other saturation plugins on the market. A number of the other plugins are a lot CPU heavier than EchoBoy too. Crystallizer is quite cool and bu...

Re: 3rd party Plugins recommendations thanks:-)

I use a handful of 3rd party plugins in Live, all of which are very reliable and in most cases very low on CPU (aside from the mastering plugins) as I use an i7 MacBook Air 11" so that I always have a machine with me. Before I go on, let me just say that the below thoughts are simply my opinion...

I just store them in folders under the library name on one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Flash-Drive-130MB/dp/B00YFI1EBC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454674362&sr=8-1&keywords=sandisk+128GB to free up some disk on my laptop. When I save a project I do a collect-all-and-save ...

Re: 11.6 inch Macbook Air

I would definitely go with as much storage as you can afford, I don't believe that it can be upgraded, at least not with very satisfactory results. Per Geekbench, the i5 13" Macbook Pro would have a slight performance edge over the i7 11" Air: https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/com...
