I'm a right tool for the job kind of guy. When I get home, I just want to have a pint
and let the "OS" do its job, without it getting in my way.
OSX just works better for me in this respect.
And I still have all my cli tools I use every day.
Live(obviously) and other stuff I use is not ...

Macbook Pro and a decent USB/Firewire interface. Sorted.

I wouldn't even look at PC laptops personally, unless you want to really splash out on a custom built machine specifically for audio.
Off-the-shelf PCs are a mess these days.

Reznor seems to use a lot of analog gear, obscure bits of kit and outboard equipment.
He especially likes running synths out through mic'd guitar amps for buckets of filthy distortion.

Try taking a synth VST and running it through a few distortion effects and maybe an Amp Sim, like Amplitube or ...

I think we just need to be patient and reserve judgement for when Live 9 actually arrives.

There is no doubt that Live 8 has gotten better and better over the past year, at least in terms of stability.
My guess, as a software development student, is that the Live codebase was/is in a sorry state ...

1. The Atom processor would be (at an educated guess) very underpowered for Ableton Live. Even a decent Core2Duo can struggle to keep Live running. Maybe with only 2 tracks of audio and no instruments or effects it might be ok, maybe.
