I had better luck after I reinstalled Automap. The order in which you install Automap and Live seems to make a difference. Can't remember now but I think it's Live first, then Automap.

@Ableton_David - I've done all that already. I can manually map Ultranova keys to functions in Live (they're immediately listed in the mapping panel) but not the knobs. Sometimes when I turn a knob, the MIDI indicator flashes and sometimes it doesn't - haven't worked out what these respective ...

@Ableton_David - yes, tried it with and without Automap. Followed instructions from Novation's guide to setting up Live, followed Live's built in lessons, downloaded Live 8.2.2b1 OS X. Ultranova is still not listed as a Control Surface in Live prefs.
