I have a similar problem - just upgraded system to the following (but PC):
Windows 7
M Audio Audiophile 192 - 192kHz PCI Soundcard
Intel CPU Core i7 870 2.93GHz
Asus Motherboard P7P55D-E Intel
8gb RAM
checked all the drivers etc. even had IT specialist look at it, CPU is fine but having issues ...

If anyone has suggestions for non-USB also - PCI audio card with break out cables - that also seems a good option...I'm all ears.
