I bought an m-audio Fast Track Pro, that has suddenly, stopped working. While waiting for warranty information, I thought I could ask the group what is the most successfully, widely used interface. I have an older eMac with 1 cpu @ 800MHz 384 SDRAM and a HP with Windows XPsp2 with 4 CPU's @ 2.40GHz ...

I should have checked the audio/midi/ setup in the preferences menu b4 asking for help. All is well.

I recently upgraded to Live Lite 6, and the record feature above works , but on the individual tracks the record button doe not light up red, it stays grey

I use an Akai 2000mpc to record everything before going into Ableton. This should not be a great deal different tho. I set quantize to off, so sounds not so "fixed"

I'm thinkin that Live 5 has that function from preferences, that is--the midi tab also says on it---sync

and the lite version only says midi

This is so ele-mental it is embarassing, but like you said --This midi/sync operation is most important.

No, there is a preference menu option and it opens audio set up;p midi set up; misc; plug-ins; etc.

what I do not see there is a mid/sync tab placed in between two other tabs. Track and Remote.

In tutorials on top of the screen in the Preferences window
there is

Audio Midi / sync Plug in ...

Thanx again, but there is some "problem" as I have a Mac and it sounds like you have an IBM clone (PC)? The options menu has in it:
edit key map
edit midi map
computer midi keyboard
delay compensation

down to

search in metadata\
