Oh I get it. You were right, these were files originally recorded in stereo. My problem was that I was adding the 'mono' utility to these tracks, hoping it would do what you showed me adding the 'left' utility does.
It all works now.

VSTs take up way too much processor load?
Hey, I've been using ableton for quite some time now, but it's been on an old thinkpad. It works completely fine on that computer, but, when i brought out my 2 year old zd7000 HP laptop (specs are Pentium 4 w/ 3.04 GHz, 2.00 GB or RAM), I find that Ableton really does not run well on it.
