so there is no way to somehow "save" the setup so I can just drag the whole synth setup into another set? Not the biggest problem in the world, but it would be nice :)

I think the best way is to save a project with your group channel setup into Library/Templates. You can then go to this template ...

I don't know if this is possible in your case, but I've always found the best stereo spread is to record the passage twice. Two different takes panned left and right will sound more human than any plugin

Seems like you found your solution, but you really don't need a specific plugin. As arachnaut said, EQ8 (with band 1 & 4 set to Low and High Cut - move to taste) and Overdrive (if you want to add some grit) will do the job nicely.

I'm a new Live owner, but I seem to be suffering from the bug described here:

Only being able to open one instance of a VST(i) in any Live session is pretty crippling, so I'm wondering if there will be another version 5 update to fix this ...
