What setup you using? Laptops frequently have a problem of ground loops, also avoid cheap plug extensions (you no the things you plug into one socket and it converts them into four etc). Try buying a GROUND LOOP ISOLATOR and running your signal through that before your soundcard or whatever.

Whilst it is perhaps academic, having 2GB of RAM made vast differences in performance within XP on my MacBook, much more noticible than OSX.

Go for at least 2GB as well, if not 3GB. That coupled with dualcore technology, you would definitely notice a difference.

XP Home is fine. As far as I know there is barely any difference? (For Bootcamp, it HAS to an SP2 installation disk whatever though).
