If I'm having trouble with a mix, occasionally I'll export everything to individual tracks (with no Compressions or EQs or anything. just the raw tracks. And start a new Project and mix again from scratch. - Oh i mean after consolidating any takes / parts. It can breath a fresh idea into a mix that ...

I generally avoid it. but I'm not sure its a major problem.

layering percussion too much just sounds cheesy.

I usually only layer Pads and Keyboards. and maybe double up on Guitar parts sometimes.

I don't layer Bass sounds much as it gets too muddy.

for Keys I'll just replay the part with a different patch and pan the two or three parts seperately.

I@m in a similar boat. I've been trying to get drum machines to sound like Velvet undergound lately and its bloody hard.

I usually re-amp stuff or run it out to analogue through this old mixer and over-drive the mixer a bit.

sometimes helps.

um seriously just learn some from existing songs. learn to play them on keyboards then you might start to understand. - or buy a bass guitar and rock out on it.
