Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? While I'm using a UA Apollo interface, conceptually I'm running into similar routing issues.
I've recently started playing around with some external effects and the routing in and out via External Audio Effects plugin is kinda doing my head in.

Tips on mapping Roland Cloud 808/909 to a Drum Rack
I can’t seem to get the mapping sorted out for the Roland Cloud 909 etc in an Ableton drum rack.
Has anyone done this previously? Pretty sure I’m missing something obvious here.
