I've switched to Ableton from Nuendo few years ago. Of course it takes some time to get used to new workflow. At first glance Ableton looked a bit like a toy compared to Nuendo, but after a couple of days of rebuilding my brains I never looked back ) PS I'm still on Suite 8 and regarding to Suite's ...

I'd say NI's The Finger. Btw it's not just a filter, much, much more and very creative )

Works fine with Live8 (Mac AU/VST)

I use mac book pro as well (2011) and NI's Reaktor and Kontakt (players) along with Ableton's synths, so it's pretty stable if I run, say, 4 instances of reaktor's synths, 4 kontakt's and 4-6 ableton's (drum racks and synths). Not to mention numerous effect (including 3d party) plugins.
