Re: What parameters do you like to automate?
I like to automate the reverb on certain elements, especially drums. It's really noticable when there's a nice trebly reverb on the snare and hihats that rises and falls every once in a while. I also like introducing a subtle delay on the drums at certain points.

Re: Are the knobs on most MIDI controllers too close together?
Most of the controllers I've used have had that problem. I guess it's just something to get used to but it would be great if there was a "roomier" controller out there.
I've played around with my friend's Korg MicroKontrol before and I noticed that the knobs seems to be spaced out a little better ...

Re: Best sounding audio interface under $300?
I've read that 4 outs is optimal? However I've also read that 2 outputs, such as a focusrite is sufficient and will get the job done. I'm looking for one for live performance and not multi channel recording.

The Saffire 6 has 4 outputs. What kind of stuff are you doing live? It all ...

Re: Programs for editing samples and good sites to get free ones
Free loop sites usually don't have great quality stuff, but free-loops.com actually has some surprisingly good sounds here and there. best one I've found.

I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 and it's excellent. It's only around $200, plus it's USB

Re: Need to create a drum rack
If you double-click on "Drum Rack" in the sidebar without pulling down any of the preset kits, it should open a blank rack.

Re: Compression
I use Ableton's Multiband Dynamics plugin a whole lot, especially for drums. I've also found that using a limiter on the master makes a big (positive) difference in the overall mix.

Compression
I've been exploring compression more and more lately, and I've never had an actual discussion with someone about how/why to use it, when it's appropriate, when it's too much, etc. So I was wondering - how and to what extent do you, personally, use compression? What are your favorite plugins/devices ...
