Re: Best "DRUMMER" plugins & ways to get live drummer beats

Jamstix for beats and SD2 for samples.

Re: A LATENCY COMPARISION CHART

- computer: macbook pro I7 2.66 (2010) 8gb ram - interface: motu 8pre - latency: (128 samples, 44.1khz) 7.14ms (in+out) I recall reading from somewhere (may have been RME forum) that firewire and usb cards introduce additional card specific buffer, and therefore the amount of latency that is shown ...

Re: power conditioners: fact or fantasy?

I have 2 different types of Furman power conditioners. I think they are a nice component in a rack setup, providing common power switch and circuit protection. Noise filtering is mostly nonsense sold by Monster, but unless you are in a big $$$ studio the high end of the conditioning is pointless (an...

Re: Won't advances eventually make musicians near obsolete?

IMO, the level of technology will eventually catch up and there will be programs that can synthesize music to a very fine degree. One example of a program that get's the idea started is Jamstix. It is not perfect but an example of what we are talking about. That future of that in combination with ot...

Re: Can you use balanced cables for unbalanced inputs?

It may work and it may not. If it is unbalanced at both ends and the ring and sleeve get bridged you may create ground loop noise (because you created a loop). Also jacking from balanced to unbalanced can cause noise (di boxes can sometimes help here).

Re: Sample Rate

then why do comparison tests choose to pick 96k to 44.1k conversion as their test setup? like this site: http://src.infinitewave.ca/ From the URL you provided: "How about conversions between other sampling rates? To limit the amount of work, we have decided to only test 96 kHz to 44.1 kHz conv...

Re: Sample Rate

Sample rate conversion quality is independent of the ratio of the conversion sample rates. It is common misconception that it is better to have whole number multipliers. The math works out "perfectly" because modern algorithms upsample first to the common multiplier and then do the convers...

Re: Sample Rate

Actually aliasing does matter - the signals and/or noise that alias down due to poor filtering before the adc (or a lack of oversampling) roll down into the bin from dc to half the sample rate. This then corrupts the signals in the band of interest, i.e. the audible range. If there is no signal at ...

Re: Sample Rate

It is important to understand that Nyquist theory says that only the frequency content of the material bellow half the sampling rate is reconstructed. It is reconstructed perfectly. It is done with sinc (not mispelled) functions which is not quite the same as sine waves. The confusion the OP seems t...

Re: studio monitor hum when computer monitor is on?

A few observations and comments: There is too much faith put in power conditioners, most problems stem from bad grounding or improper wiring in the gear, not the supply power. So it is better to try all fixes before going to the power conditioner (the most expensive solution). It would seem your mon...

Re: "Low" latency?

Absolute zero latency doesn't happen even with the best analog gear. Many acoustic instruments have their own inherent latency as well. For every foot you are away from your sound source you get 1 ms additional latency. Imagine the guitar hero with the wall of Marshalls behind him on a big stage. Se...

Re: Best 88 key graduated hammer action master controller?

These controllers have a poor feel. IMO nothing really beats the hammer action on the equipped Yamaha keyboards. They are the best. I use an S08 as a controller and it works great! Any of the others have the same great piano feel. Try them out for yourself.

Re: SSD vs HDD

The problem with SSD in Live may be related to the size of your library. You want to be able to load samples quickly. Generally SSDs are used as the boot/root drive in conjunction with a HDD for large data storage. You might not see significant Live gains in that case. I suppose setting the page fil...

Re: recommend mic & preamp please

The Shure SM-57 (SM-58 is the same with ball filter) is the closest to a dual purpose mike out there. It is cheap and you can use it to record both in the studio and for live music. However it is really best for recording amps and drums (i.e. loud sources) and because it is a dynamic mike it will re...
