I have been using Ableton live now since Live 6, I do find it very user friendly but one thing troubles me slightly.

You can see you have your audio effects, instruments, midi effects on the top folder, when you go into the library folders I also see again instruments under presets ...

Or blow the lot and get

IMAC PC intelcore 2duo 2.16GHZ 1MB ...

I think just get the best you can afford, but I've been running Ableton 4 on a P4 with 246 meg RAM. Admittedly it crashes constantly, but I think you would be OK with a GIG.
