7200rpm makes a big difference (especially for load times of things). though i don't know about the availability of them in macs.

I have cpu load issues when running a set with a lot of channels and samples/vst's (> 20 channels) - in particular if I adjust tempo on the fly my audio will break up as the the cpu gets saturated as it tries to adjust all the samples.
