This is exactly the same issue I'm having. I believe it's related to the new library browser and Ableton Index going through large sample collections. It's frustrating because the start-up on Live 8 was a lot faster, with the same setup.
I'm going to remove the external HDD from Ableton's browser ...

Re: Projector for live performance
Interesting!
Kevin, I see that LED/laser projectors are superior in many ways,
but a bit beyond my price range at the moment. I'm sure eventually
they'll be made more affordable.
dysanfel, the projection looks great. As you mentioned you use 800x600,

Re: Projector for live performance
Great, thanks for the helpful input! I'll figure out what parameters
I need on Projector Central, then narrow down from there. You're right,
for a complete new-comer to projectors, it's a big field to navigate in,
and I appreciate all the input here on the forum.

Re: Projector for live performance
Still haven't bought a projector yet, doing further research
to see if I need a short-throw/wide-angle projector or not.
Looks like it might be a Christmas gift for myself. Mm, can't
wait to be V/DJing or is that A/VJing...

simmerdown, I found by chance this free software which might
do what you're looking for:
Video Projection Tool (VPT) 6.0
VPT is a free multipurpose realtime projection software tool for Mac and Windows created by HC Gilje.

Re: Projector for live performance
Do you mean the scrolling bands of black which show up whenever you
film a scene with computer screens? I always imagined it's due to the
refresh rates of the computer screen (60Hz? and I guess in your case
the projector) and the video camera being out of sync with each other.

Re: Projector for live performance
Just curious, dysanfel, could you tell me what kind of projector setup
you use? Is it rear-projection and/or short-throw?
I'm thinking that I will start with just a fully prepared video to project,
with live musical accompaniment like in silent films. Eventually, it'd be
nice to manipulate video ...

Re: Projector for live performance
Still not certain if it's the most suitable for the purpose, but I was
looking at BenQ MX660 .
I wanted a projector which I could also use for watching films at home,
having a huge screen/workspace for Ableton, to project designs for painting
large surfaces...
Is that asking too much?

Wow, thank you so much for that extensive post, Pitch Black!
It's great to see exactly how you go about putting on the video projection
for the show, from someone of such experience. I've seen videos of your

Re: Projector for live performance
To sum up my findings so far. Important things to consider are:
2500 lumens or brighter
Good contrast ( more info )
Resolution (XGA or better, more info )
Size of image and throw distance
As 102455 pointed out, it helps to know how big the projected image
should be. For example, one projector ...

Re: Projector for live performance
OK, found more info. In general, people seem to agree that more
than 2500 lumens are necessary, and at least XGA resolution. Also
to consider: zoom range, keystone correction, the cost of the projector
(short-throw/wide-angle brings the price up considerably) and replacement
lamps.

Projector for live performance
Is anyone familiar with what type of projector is recommended
for accompanying live performance?
From what I've read, I should be looking for higher contrast,
higher lumens, and possibly with a "short throw" lens so the
projector can sit on stage, not out in the crowd.

Re: Recording to external HDD?
I see, so that's how I can use separate HDDs for samples and
recordings.
Thank you, invol, for the good info. I hope this will solve the
problem that I'm having with getting a clean recording.
