So the real challenge is to tell Max to load that preset (or the default plugin state) every time the Live project is loaded.

Without seeing your Max patcher in detail, my first guess is that the loadbang object could do the job.

Thanks a lot gross9978 and jeblo05! Push Hacker 2 looks like the perfect solution for my problem. Unfortunately it isn't sold anymore and seems to not work with Ableton Live 12. I'll ask the developers if they plan to release an updated version soon.
