A P4 (It must be a Pentium 4) will be totally underpowered for anything other than very basic stuff in Ableton, regardless of RAM.

My P4 2.8ghz really struggled with more than a few basic tracks with effects racks in live 7.

What the article is saying is that you should continue to use stereo tracks, stereo reverb etc.. but to make crtical mixing descisions (ie balance & EQ) in mono first before you start thinking in stereo. Your final mix will still be stereo, but will be highly mono compatab...

I doubt that it's below the capabilities of the chip in the Macbook to do this. I regularly dual screen my HPNX7400 with an external monitor with no issues , and that uses a lowly intel GMA 950 chip. Like you said - this isn't fancy 3-D rendering.

Not in a single Cell, but can be done using slice to new midi track. It will produce one cell per transient (@10 - 16 slices for a 1 bar loop)
Select the audio clip containing the drum loop and choose 'slice to new midi track'.
