Custom Midi Playhead

Any ideas how I could read a midi clip into an in-memory data structure and then use something like a phasor~ to drive playback at different rates?

Thanks!

Re: PDC and Midi Device

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but if I developed some audio effect that was computationally complex (i.e. very time-consuming), then it would induce latency or maybe buffer under-runs, without involving oversampling or precalculation, right? If that is true, then would the exact latency be dependent...

Re: PDC and Midi Device

I see it. That's great- thanks! One followup: I found a document from Ableton which described how to calculate this latency, but it seems that this would be machine-specific (for the developer). If this is so, how does Ableton achieve sample accurate PDC since latency varies across users' machines? ...

PDC and Midi Device

I've seen that Pipe can be used to delay a midi note, however, is there a way to play a midi note earlier (ie ahead of the beat or as an anticipation)? If so, does this rely on the Ableton's PDC? Other question is how is PDC calculated, in general? Is it at all different for m4l devices? The reason ...

Re: General assessment of push development with m4l

thanks for responding. can you elaborate? what are the pitfalls you wish you knew beforehand? how deep was your experience with push/m4l? what about deciding when to use the native scripts or not? do updated scripts (from ableton) break things? I've heard that m4l runs at a higher latency- which mak...

General assessment of push development with m4l

Hi! I'm considering investing a lot of work into using m4l to develop some custom push apps. I'm curious how worthwhile it may be. It doesn't seem like there have been a ton of apps developed for push, compared to something like the monome, which makes me suspicious. I'd primarily like to run these ...

Device or technique for keeping gain constant while mixing

I'm still working on adjusting my ears to not respond to volume differences when mixing (by default, louder often seems better), particularly A/B tests. Is there any technique, plugin, m4l device, magic potion to keep volume mostly consistent on a track? Currently, I'll just adjust the gain till the...

Displaying plugin parameters in different units (Kontakt)

I'm guessing this is a Kontakt issue, but has anyone ever changed a parameter unit (e.g. Envelope Attack) in Kontakt to beats (instead of ms) and then tried to automate it in Live? The Live panel unit is still milliseconds, although in Kontakt it is displayed in beat units. Kinda unusable if I can't...

Re: adding FM to an external source

Ok- so I got this working pretty nicely. For anyone interested, here's the setup: It requires a Midi Track (MT), a Return Track (RT), and a track to serve as the Audio Source (AS) (could be a MIDI or Audio track, depending on your needs): 1) Put FM8 FX on the RT 2) Route Audio Output of AS to RT: se...

Re: adding FM to an external source

It looks like I can use FM8 as an insert effect and designate the audio stream as an operator. Not sure how useable this is going to be though- but at a base level, it does work. I need to do some more experimentation.

Re: adding FM to an external source

Good suggestions- thanks for the tips! Yeah- FM and Freq Shifter are similar, insofar as they're operating in the frequency domain, but the effect is very different (in my experience) because generally FM is adding overtones without changing your fundamental whereas Frequency Shifter is just moving ...

adding FM to an external source

I love how you can add FM to your sounds in Sampler- but what if I have some other sound produced by a non-sampler device? Is there a way to add FM almost like an insert effect? Perhaps an M4L device or some special trick?

Thanks! =)

audio device for clip-localized tempo

hi, i'd really like to see a device that lets me play audio clips at non-global tempos. i want to be able to crossfade two audio tracks if they're not in the same tempo- a geeky, but awesome effect known as a metric modulation. any suggestions? i wouldn't be disappointed if this is just something i ...

suggest advanced tutorials on operator or analog

Hi, I've got the basics of operator & analog- and I've been going through various presets trying to see the techniques that are used to make the variety of sounds, but I wonder if anyone can suggest some tutorials which give more techniques for sound design with these synths. I'm new to synth st...
