I have added another cool audio demo called 'Ghost Ship' by shadoe42 to the product page. A really nice dark sounding track. Very creepy!

you could also use a traditional control system like perforce or subversion if you dont mind managing the files manually and forsaking complete integration.

I have found that this makes a difference. I use this for beats and loops. Larger audio files I tend to leave as disc streaming.

There is plenty more free content on that page. Mostly demo packs for my larger commercial libraries, but all the demo packs are also royalty free. I pride myself on creating libraries that stray form the norm ;-)

do they work on mac? Yeah they work on mac. They are packaged into a .rar file as this gives better compression than zip, so you will need a program to un-rar the file. Not sure which ones are good on mac as I use windows machine. These sounds were created a few years ago, I have just put them back...

I run both Live8 and Cubase 6 on Windows 7 and it has been highly stable for me. As long as you are running a decent quality pc built out of good components and not using crap drivers then you will be totally fine.
