Re: Questions for Mac users...

Cheers for memory advice!

Standard iMac comes with 4GB (1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM), and it's around £136 extra (with educational discount) to double it to 8GB... I thought that was quite resonable.

But you're right moonpie, Crucial equivalent comes in around £92. How easy is it to add the memory yourself ...

Re: Questions for Mac users...

Carl, AT, Tarekith - thank you!

I really appreciate your insight.

I'm going to go for the iMac i5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Hopefully it'll do the job for the next 3-5 years... fingers crossed!

Cheers!

Questions for Mac users...

I'm on the verge of converting to Mac - got my eye on the iMac i5/i7 + 8GB RAM - but before I go for it I'd be grateful for any feedback on the following points...

1. Does anyone have any of the new iMac series? Feedback thus far with Ableton and Logic?
2. I only want the Mac to produce tracks with ...

Re: Advice needed re brand new future-proof computer!!

@nuxnamon - Good call! There are some decent options there... I hadn't considered an iMac before but there are a few with better specs than a new MacBook Pro that are considerably cheaper.

@Khazul - Your new machine is a beast! It must have cost quite a lot to put it together but I bet it flies ...

Re: Advice needed re brand new future-proof computer!!

@KrisM - Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated. I am now leaning towards converting to Mac! I'm the same as you, I love the idea of buying new components and putting together a new machine... plus I'd get better specs on a custom-built PC than on a Macbook Pro and for less money. But it ...

Advice needed re brand new future-proof computer!!

Hi all,

I got my last PC custom-built about 4 or 5 years ago now, and it’s struggling to cope with Ableton and my plugins now. I’m looking to buy a new one that will hopefully be future-proof for the next 3-5 years.

I don’t really do any recording, but I do use the following plugins:

Ableton Live ...

Thanks for the replies.
I consider 2G to be minimum for music work, it is certainly the least I'd want to use with Live.
I thought XP can only see 2GB! How can I get it to see 4GB?!

Nagal - thanks again for your advice - I'll look into the X5365...

Ultimate Windows XP Machine?!

I'm want to buy a new computer, mainly for music production in Live 6 (with lots of plug-ins!) and some video editing. I'd like the fastest, most powerful and reliable computer possible - but for compatibility reasons, I'm sticking with XP Pro 32-Bit. I've done a lot of research and here's what I've ...

Thanks for the advice Nagal, it's much appreciated - & it's probably saved me a fortune! How come the quad-core processor I mentioned is £600 (www.dabs.co.uk) and the one you mentioned is £170?! There doesn't seem to be that big a difference between the two! Thanks again.

Where? Show me the link...

No one else made the "exact" same thread as me you muppet. I wouldn't have asked any of these questions if the answers relevant to me were already archived.

Your reply is completely pointless. Being an attorney, you'd think you'd be helpful and give advice. Obviously not ...

Buying components for new PC & need your expert advice!!

I'm putting together a new PC & would appreciate your advice on a few things...

1 I'm going for the Intel Quad Core Extreme QX6850 3GHz processor, can anyone recommend a motherboard to me?! There are so many to choose from!

2 I've heard to get the best out of a quad core processor you should have ...

I reckon you are crazy. If you want a kick-arse windows machine, just buy a windows machine. Sure the Macs are intels now and all that ... it just sounds crazy to me, a Mac user, former Windows XP and still current Linux user, to spend that much money on the hardware and not use OSX.

When I went ...

Thanks for all the responses and insight everyone - they're much appreciated.

I've decided to go with the 8-core 3GHz / 8GB RAM Mac Pro & run XP through Bootcamp - it'll cost a fortune but that's what loans are for ;)

I'll upgrade to Vista at some point & may even install Live on both operating ...

Zevo - thanks for your advice. Bootcamp looks like the way to go since my current interface is the FA-101. Regarding your question - it's actually a very good one!! I guess the power of the new Mac Pros' appeal to me - but I'd prefer to stick with Windows. I'm also concerned that some of my plug-ins ...
