My 25SL has the same behavior.
I was also frustrated at first, but I usually work with my headphones so I don't hear that annoying noises.

for the second one,
you can press shift + tab to change the view between waveform and effects.
and also try alt/option + arrow up and down to move between clips(session view)and effects.
this helps me a lot.

I just found out there was a free spectrum analyzer for mac.
this was something I've been looking for.
I haven't tried so I don't know the quality but why not try. it's free.
