Hi,
It seems to me that Snow Leopard is now free, though not advertised so. A friend of mine went to an Apple Store, and they updated his 2008 pre-unibody MBP for free !
The reason is that Lion (10.7) is the minimum OS required to use iCloud, and you can upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion (10.8) only ...

Not a specialist, but did you try the lock automation button on the upper right corner of the arrangement view (Next to the "Set" and the arrows)?
