Re: Massive vs FM8 vs Zebra 2?

They're very different synths (I own all three.) Zebra can do anything, provided you learn how to use it - very light on CPU for most things as well. I never got in to FM synthesis. Massive is cool, but all three carry a learning curve. If you're a preset person, Massive will have the largest librar...

What tone61 said. That was the "gateway drug" that got me in to Live 6 and from there, to Live 8 Suite and finally Live 9 Suite.

Re: How many of you actually use MIDI controllers?

I have three controllers - a small iRig Keys in front of the Mac, APC40 off to one side, and a Novation Impulse 61 to my right. I use the iRig Keys to demo sounds when I'm working on synth patches and play the Novation when recording.

Re: Synthesizer: Ultranova or Blofeld for Ableton Live?

Also, the Ultranova can't really make any sounds that you can't get out of Analog or Operator in Live, whereas the Blofeld has a different sound, so you will get something else. For the VA sounds, this is definitely true. The filter in the UltraNova sounds different to me. The wavetable and ringmod...

Re: Anybody with a 2012 iMac 21.5 with 5400 RPM Drive?

I needed to double check, and mine is a 7200 RPM drive. Irrelevant as the samples are kept on the 5400 RPM drive in any case. Put enough RAM in your Mac and it won't matter what the spin speed of your hard drive is, as Kontakt will play the samples from RAM. I have 16 GB in my iMac.

Re: whoa FLYLO!!!

Warp is lightyears ahead of what it was back in the Sonic Foundry Acid 1.0 days, but sure, it only does so much. It's one feature of Live I rarely, if ever use.

Re: How to know you are ready to move a project to Arrangement?

I load up clips/scenes in Session View and then manually run through the different scenes. When it sounds like there's enough there to carry a song, then I start bringing the bits into Arrangement view. I also hold off on automating until I have the song structure laid out so I can hear how the piec...

Re: whoa FLYLO!!!

I used to hear the same crap 12 years ago about Fruity Loops/FL Studio - until I took samples out of Reason, loaded them up in FL, then rendered the same beat in both and... They sounded exactly alike. You couldn't even see the difference in the waveforms of the rendered audio. The moral of this sto...

Re: Anybody with a 2012 iMac 21.5 with 5400 RPM Drive?

My 2010 iMac has a 5400 RPM boot drive and the external FireWire drive holding my samples is also 5400 RPM, and holds my Live Packs and also my libraries for Kontakt 5. It's not an issue provided the machine has enough RAM, especially if you can run 64 bit Live - I have 16GB in the iMac and have nev...

Re: Can you use 2 separate Midi controllers w/templates in Live?

I use an APC40 and a Novation Impulse - APC is set up as a control surface and the Novation does Automap. No conflicts - if I'm facing my desk, I use the APC; if I'm playing keys, I control from the Novation.

Re: Reason 7

Being able to make Rex loops in Reason, and Live now has Rex support... I could see this being useful. (I have 6.5 already - they'll probably get my money, just like NI will for Komplete 9.)

I've not new to Live, and I like the browser. With Suite and a couple of third party packs, it's really handy to preview sounds with one click.

Re: Access Virus and Ableton Live 9?

I have a disturbing ability to make people want to spend money... My thought was exactly that - if I do gig, I'd rather have a "traditional" synth than rack/desktop module plus controller. I could always get the rack ears and shove it into my Korg RADIAS keyboard assembly, but then I lose aftertouch...
