16 bit: you better record close to 0dB as you can, or you'll end up with bad signal/noise or with de-facto 12-bit files or other ugly artifacts. But don't clip. 24bit: don't worry about peaks, in fact, record at levels that are garunteed not to clip and feel safe knowing you've got extra amount of ...

I wonder if recording in 24 bit will make any difference in the end. It might sound better in the .wav format, but when I render audio, I convert it to 16 bit as that's the standard CD audio format. Still, I'm reading an interesting book about digital mixing and the author recommends to use 24 or 32...

Should I record in 16 or 24 bit?
I know that the standard format for CD audio is 16 bit, 44 kHz. My audio interface (Toneport UX2) lets me choose 24 bit and 48 kHz. Should I record in 24 bit/48 kHz, since I'll probably have to convert it back to 16 bit when rendering the audio? Will there be any audible difference when recording in...

Questions about volume & dB
I've been writing and arranging music for years now, but I'm still a recording newbie. I'd like to know if there's a basic rule for setting the volume of recorded tracks. I'm never quite sure whether my song is generally too loud or to quiet. I try comparing it to professional productions, but it's ...

Using external drive for recording (good idea?)
Hello! I bought an external 320 gbyte hard drive, which I will use solely for recording music. However I've got Ableton installed on the internal D: drive. Should I re-install Ableton on the external drive as well? I thought it might slow down the recording process when internal and external drives ...

As mentioned before I could still leave the track's panning at center and use the pan knob on the return (which works fine), but that would mean that I could only send tracks to the VST plugin, which will either be panned right OR left. Thus meaning that I would have to set up two VST instances, whi...

The return tracks contain all the VSTs. The problem occurs on the audio tracks, which send their signals to the returns. No, I always record in stereo, they are all stereo. Edit: I've had the same problem in other sequencing programs as well. The sound would always be completely turned off when pann...
