How many people with laptops/regular pc's/mac pc's should be able to all connect with each other and do a live show?

I saw the mp3 thread and thought of the following idea.
Why doesn't ableton design its own sound format with a high compression or something in that direction. They could design they're own converters as well. Maybe then they can get rid of the ughe wav files problem.

I say pc because its easier, and there is more software/updates whatever around for pc's.
Just only install the stuff you need on the laptop, to prevent is from crashing.
A 2.4 GHz with 256 or 512 MB DDR should be sufficiant enough.
