I solved it. And maybe this is a bug? There was a Simpler containing the offending noise clip, triggered by a midi note lurking within a larger Group of tracks. I had disabled the group, and all the other tracks within *except* this Simpler were muted. That seems either non-intuitive or just wrong?

That's a good question, but I'm not using any returns in this track.

It's pretty strange: in arrangement view I can disable every track and loop this little section of the song, and the same bit of noise keeps repeating.
