Re: Mastering In Ableton

In Live, it's difficult for me to split tracks that run together such that there's no gap during playback.

On the other hand, Audacity or SoundForge, I know, have a Z hotkey that jumps to zero crossings for accurate and precise splitting.

Re: Efficient way to bounce small audio bits?

Routing from Master and recording into a new track has latency, whereas routing from Resampling doesn't - even though it's still the audio coming from Master.

Try Resampling instead?

Re: Global "detune" parameter in Operator

I've very interested in microtuning.

Could you walk me how you accomplish it with Sampler?

Re: Getting a good mix for Ableton

Getting a good mix isn't trivial. The best mixers in the world get PAID for it.

There's a lot to go into. I recommend this book. Very comprehensive.

Re: Complete and total newbie with a few questions...

Sequencing tracks for burning falls under mastering duties in my book, which I initially tried to do in Live but now use Audacity for. I render my tracks at project bit/sample rates in Live serially and do everything to make it loud in a rack on the master. DON'T DITHER YET. Import all tracks to Aud...

Re: Is it bad to always leave your studio monitors on?

I turn mine off because they suck power; it'd be rad if they could go into standby like a screen.

Maybe they could call them "Follow Envelopes"?

Re: Tips for boosting/balancing sessions for live performance

Unless the limiter is running constantly (i.e. gain reduction never returns to zero), couldn't you just run your stems with the limiter you use in production on your Master? Is it a 3rd party CPU hog?

Re: Creating the song.

I use most of my effects in the song-writing / sound-engineering phases.

When it comes to mixing I don't use much more than compression, EQ, and reverb.

Which doesn't, of course, exclude the possibility of using all 3 of those things to shape my tones before I get to mixing.

Re: Creating the song.

Put a Utility on your Master, MIDI/keymap the Width control to toggle between 100% and 0%.

Push that button/key any time you want to check mono compatibility whether writing or mixing.

Re: Need some guidance on a specific workflow

If you roll this way I encourage you to nail at least 2 takes of each idea per scene, that way if you end up using it you've already double-tracked it. Just bound a one take with the loop markers and then copy the clip to another track on the same scene and move the loop to the other take. Bus the 2...

Yeah, like that other guy said, I think you just need to render the different options for the director then go drop those printed clips back on their own tracks.

Re: Monitors...

Ideally they'll be at ear level when in your listening position. Moreover, they'll be pointed straight at you, not angled up or down (in case you were wondering about that).

Re: Burning man

The essence of the experience, I feel, is a birthright.

That one must pony up big bucks to a corporate brand to have that experience is symptomatic of how fucked our world is.

Therein lies the paradox I discovered in my experience, and why I now consider myself post-Burner.
