Worse still, the official page doesn't even mention that .alc files can contain midi, too:

.alc = ableton live clip (contains references to samples on disk (rather than the audio data itself))

For the record, the reason you were only able to send on all or no channels is because Live doesn't support multi-channel MIDI. For the record: At least with Ableton Live 9 Suite it's possible to send an envelope to a specific MIDI channel on a specific MIDI interface: In the MIDI track in Session ...
